Jean Rises for Women & How to Style Them

When it comes to finding that ever-elusive perfect pair of jeans, the rise (where the waistband falls along your midsection) plays a very important role. Choosing a rise comes down to what look you’re going for, and what’s most flattering and comfortable for your body type. While high waisted jeans accentuate your waist and elongate your legs, mid rise jeans provide structure and help make you appear more proportional. Ahead, we’ll dive into four different jean rises and give you tips on how to style them flawlessly.

Low Rise Jeans

Gen Z has their opinion, but as far as we’re concerned, Yes, low rise jeans are back, and bringing all the ’90s vibes with them. With a 9 ¼” front rise, low rise jeans sit below your navel, right around the hip bones. They should be a little loose to avoid emphasizing the wrong places—in fact, you can even size up for a slouchy, on-trend look. Low rise jeans are a great option for those with short waists, or straight or athletic body shapes.

Next, you’ll have to consider the leg shape. Low rise baggy jeans can feel very cool and modern, especially in a washed black or crisp white. Or, if you want to lean into the Y2K aesthetic, go for a low rise cargo jean.

As far as styling goes, low rise jeans work well with crop tops (think corsets, fitted tees and tube tops) as well as oversized button-ups and blazers. Complete the look with loafers, low-heeled pumps or any kind of platform.

Mid Rise Jeans

Mid rise jeans are exactly what they sound like, hitting right in the middle of your navel and hips. The universally flattering 10 ¼” front rise offers structure, comfort and, perhaps most importantly, versatility.

Since mid rise jeans compliment virtually every body type, you really can’t go wrong choosing a fit. We love a ’70s flare paired with platform sandals for that “I’m with the band” look. If long and lean is what you’re going for, try a mid rise skyscraper jean with your highest heels.

Even more good news: Mid rise jeans can be easily styled with any type of top, as well as dressed up or down. Tuck in a relaxed basic tee, knot a linen button-up at the waist or throw on a bodysuit. The outfit options are endless.

High Rise Jeans

High waisted jeans are extremely popular for a reason—actually, a few of them. Elevated and elegant, high waisted jeans highlight the curves of your body and flatter the derrière. (And who doesn’t want that?) With an 11 ¼” front rise, high waisted jeans button at the narrowest point on your torso. Since these styles visually elongate the legs, they’re a great option for our petite girls.

As far as leg shapes go, it all depends on preference. A high-waisted skinny jean is a classic choice, as it’s simple to style and leg-lengthening. You can also opt for a dark wash straight leg pair that works all year round, or waist-nipping high waisted wide leg jeans with vintage-inspired details.

High waisted jeans look great paired with tucked-in tees and sweaters, or cropped jackets. You can keep things casual with a bodysuit and sneakers, or craft an office-appropriate look with a tailored button-up or blouse and loafers or heels.

Super High Rise Jeans

Are classic high waisted jeans not cutting it for you? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered...literally. Enter the super high waisted jean, coming in with a 12 ¼” front rise that hits at your natural waist. This is legs for days territory, and about as flattering as it gets.

When the waist is this high, you can go all-in on volume with a baggy, pleated wide leg style. You can also choose a super high waisted pair with distressed details for a more casual feel, or try a slim fit in a dark wash that pairs with everything in your closet.
